The state capital of North Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf, is located in the central Rhineland and is home to 600,000 residents. It ranks first in Germany and sixth worldwide in terms of quality of life.
Düsseldorf is a magnet for tourists and shoppers alike.
What Frankfurt is to the Rhine-Main region, Düsseldorf is to the Rhine-Ruhr area: one of Germany’s most important hubs for business, transport, and culture. The city is home to numerous large corporations, chemical and automotive industry factories, consultancies, advertising agencies, and major trade fairs – including Germany’s leading fashion fairs, thanks to its proximity to the textile hubs of Krefeld and Mönchengladbach.
Top sights include the elegant shopping boulevard Königsallee (the “Kö”), the historic Altstadt with its famous “longest bar in the world,” the modern MedienHafen with its TV tower and state parliament. Düsseldorf is also the birthplace of the renowned poet Heinrich Heine (1797–1856), whose house can still be visited.
The cartwheeler (Radschläger) is a traditional symbol of the city and part of its cultural heritage. This tradition is kept alive today by the annual Radschläger competition.
Also worth visiting is the expansive Rhine Promenade along the edge of the old town. It stretches from the State Parliament past Mannesmannufer, Rathausufer, Schlossufer, and Tonhallenufer all the way to the Rheinpark. Thanks to the relocation of the busy Rhine embankment road into a tunnel, the promenade has reconnected the city to the river and is now considered one of the most beautiful along the Rhine. From noon onwards, the sun shines directly on the promenade. Near Burgplatz, between the Castle Tower and the historic water gauge, you’ll find several piers offering scenic river cruises. The promenade’s wave-shaped paving symbolizes the flowing movement of the Rhine. Numerous cafés invite you to relax and enjoy the view.
Another highlight is Düsseldorf’s City Hall (Rathaus), in front of which stands the equestrian statue of Elector Johann Wilhelm II (1658–1716), known as Jan Wellem – one of the most important baroque equestrian monuments north of the Alps.
Also remarkable, though less obvious, are the city’s 17,000 gas lanterns – still glowing in their historical design. After Berlin, Düsseldorf has the most gas lanterns of any German city.
A permanent part of our city tour is the Hofgarten with its water fountain. Created in 1769 by Nicolas de Pigage, it was Germany’s first public park and later inspired the English Garden in Munich. Much like Cologne’s green belt, the Hofgarten is the city’s “green lung” and home to the Goethe Museum. Visitors also enjoy the self-illuminating park benches on the Reiterallee and the various sculptures by renowned artists found throughout the park.

The Nordpark is one of Düsseldorf’s largest green spaces and home to the Japanese Garden – a gift from the city’s Japanese community to the people of Düsseldorf. Spanning 5,000 square meters, it showcases traditional Japanese landscaping and design. In the Oberkassel district, you’ll also find the EKO House of Japanese Culture – Europe’s first and only Buddhist temple built by Japanese nationals.
One of Düsseldorf’s newest landmarks is the MedienHafen – a creative quarter that blends old and new. Historic structures from the former Rhine harbor, such as quay walls and railway tracks, now stand alongside cutting-edge buildings designed by world-renowned architects like Frank O. Gehry, Claude Vasconi, and David Chipperfield. Gehry’s iconic “dancing buildings” in particular define the skyline of this vibrant district, which is also known for its trendy bars and restaurants, embodying the city’s modern lifestyle.
To the south of Düsseldorf, along the banks of the Rhine, lies Benrath Palace and Park – a magnificent 18th-century residence built as a pleasure and hunting château for Elector Carl Theodor. Its expansive grounds are perfect for a relaxed stroll. The east wing houses the Museum of European Garden Art, while the west wing is home to the Museum of Natural History.
